The ACT is a standardized exam that measures high school students’ skills in English, Math, Reading, Science, and includes an optional writing section. While some schools no longer require ACT scores for admission, the test remains a crucial factor for scholarships and admission to specific advanced college programs.
Most high school students aim for a score of 24, which places them in the 75th percentile. Unfortunately, ACT scores have been dropping across much of the country, with the 2023 average falling below 20.
Educational Resource Associates in Ankeny has developed a preparation program that typically produces gains of 7–11 points. Our instruction often boosts scores into the 30s, with some students even achieving a perfect 36. What makes our program different is that we recognize the ACT is primarily a test of comprehension. Every section, including math, requires strong analytical skills.
Our first step is to administer a complete ACT to each student. We then perform a detailed analysis to identify strengths and weaknesses. If we discover gaps in reading comprehension or basic math, for example, those areas are then addressed with remediation before beginning direct ACT preparation.
Each student receives an individualized plan designed to help them improve their performance. In addition to learning the necessary concepts, students regularly practice subtests. Their results are charted and graphed, allowing us to pinpoint weaknesses and maximize progress.
Our tutors are selected for their expertise in math, science, and communication. While they follow the structured ERA program, their own high ACT scores (often between 34 and 36) allow them to deliver high-level instruction. They are also skilled at motivating and connecting with pre-college students. The enthusiasm our instructors have for student achievement has a direct, positive impact on performance, reducing anxiety so they can approach the test with confidence. These factors, combined with practice, help build focus and stamina for the strenuous, four-hour exam.
When students achieve scores in the 28–36 range, they gain the ability to choose from top colleges and universities. In fact, many secure full scholarships and placement in competitive academic programs. Beyond the test, this experience often leads to a more confident, organized, and successful college student.

“Since I’ve been going to Judy’s, it’s been awesome. I’ve learned a lot. I’ve gotten ten times better than I’ve gotten since I went to high school and middle school. I’ve learned a lot more from Judy than from the school district.”
